The Long Island Reads 2024 selection is Better Living Through Birding: Notes from a Black Man in the Natural Worldby Christian Cooper. Itis the true story of a man on a pilgrimage to communities and regions sacred to him. Christian Cooper migrates through life between racism, homophobia, and the beauty he sees through his binoculars. Set in New York City and around the world, this story reminds everyone about self-acceptance and to be proud of who you are. A limited number of complimentary copies will be provided to MMSCL cardholders who are registered for the April book discussion.

Children in grades K-6 are invited to drop in and read their favorite book to a certified therapy dog. This activity helps strengthen reading skills while children gain confidence in reading out loud.

Teens in grades 8-12 read with younger children during the Library’s ENL classes at William Floyd High School on Monday nights. Potential volunteers must fill out an application. Applications can be picked up in the Teen Department of the Mastic Beach or Moriches Branch.Two hours of community service is available each Monday night. This is an on-going program.
Improve your health with a refreshing walk around Terrell River County Park, a passive park and preserve located south of Montauk Highway in Center Moriches. The park has beautiful vistas and is known for its hiking trails. The Terrell River Trail is about a 2.6-mile trail good for all skill levels. Walking will begin promptly at 9:30 AM. Dress appropriately for trail hiking. Bring sunscreen and bug spray as necessary. Weather permitting.
