80 years ago on September 21st at 2:30 p.m. the Northeast was caught by surprise when the Great Hurricane made landfall on Long Island with wind gusts up to 186 mph and a 17 ft storm surge resulting in 700 deaths. (Superstorm Sandy had wind gusts up to 89 mph) Learn more about this incredible storm from Professor Scott Mandia of Suffolk Community College.
